End of summer activities in Eastbourne this bank holiday

This weekend grants us the final bank holiday of the summer, so let 1 Small Step give you the skinny on some upcoming events to help cement the end of this lovely season.

Eastbourne Walking Tours This gentle walking tour of Eastbourne starts at the Bandstand on the middle prom, lasting one and a half hours with 12 stopping points of interest along a 1 mile round starting and finishing at Eastbourne Bandstand.

Join the tour to unearth interesting facts about landmarks, learn more about the history of seafront hotels, discover what happened to the Pier during World War Two, the location of a disused air raid shelter and why crabs walk sideways!

The Eastbourne Walking Tours are available five times a week until the end of October, taking place at 3pm on Mondays and Wednesdays, at 8pm on Thursday and 11am and 8pm on Sundays, offering the chance to enjoy a gentle stroll after dinner.

The tours cost £5 per person and can be paid on arrival. Contact harrythewriter@btinternet.com or turn up on the day.

Eastbourne‘s Tea Dances Chris Mannion provides the live musical accompaniment for this summer’s Tea Dances on Tuesday 28th August from 2pm. No matter what your dancing ability, put on your dancing shoes and take a trip around the Winter Garden dance floor.

Call 01323 412000 or boxoffice@eastbourne.gov.uk for tickets or information. Entry is £5, including tea and biscuits.

Marie Curie Walk 10 Say au revoir to the summer with an evening stroll down Eastbourne’s famous promenade and raise money for charity at the same time. Take in the sea air and the seaside’s main attractions as the sun sets and help Marie Curie nurses continue providing for terminally ill patients in the local area.

The event starts at 6pm on Saturday 8th September, starting at King Edwards Parade with celebrations after the walk until 10pm – so pack a picnic for an evening of live music and family entertainment.

Register online now here for £10 or on the night for £20. Children under 16 are free and do not need to register, but must be accompanied by an adult.

Time is of the essence…

Image

Time is of the essence today, with people constantly stretched between working, looking after the family and finding opportunities to enjoy ourselves. Between all these different priorities we also need to find time to eat, and with minutes and hours so precious we run the risk of grabbing the less time consuming options found on supermarket shelves which can be high in saturated fat and salt.

Preparing food for yourself from basic ingredients doesn’t have to take a long time and is an excellent way of placing you in control of what goes into meals for you and your family.

We’ve picked out some of the best websites and recipe books for easy to prepare, well balanced meals and shared them below. If you’ve got any you want to add, head over to the 1 Small Step Facebook page and share them.

Traditional British Meals recipe book from the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) contains balanced versions of British classics, including fish and chips and a Sunday roast.

The Recipe Finder from Change4Life features hundreds of ideas for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with lots of child friendly options. All are low in saturated fat, salt and can be prepared in 30 minutes or less.

Another great recipe book from WCRF gives you inspiration for working towards your 5 fruit and veg portions.

All eyes on Team GB

In the unlikely event that it passed you by, the London 2012 Games finally began this weekend to great acclaim for Danny Boyle’s spectacular opening ceremony, featuring quirky references to timeless British humour and a well delivered appearance by Queen Elizabeth herself, with a very nervous moment as the 1 Small Step team considered the possibility the Queen really was parachuting into the arena.

With so many events taking place, there is a sport for everyone to enjoy, be it watching or participating. Today, we are most looking forward to watching Louis Smith compete in the artistic gymnastics final on the pommel horse and Tom Daley see off the competition in the diving final on the 10m platform.

Who else should we be watching?

Are we missing out on an athlete’s great technique or niche sport? Let us know on the 1 Small Step Facebook page.

Incentives on offer with Facebook activity challenges

If you feel like getting active in the warmer conditions, but would like to be rewarded for your efforts, then head over to the 1 Small Step Facebook page to take part in one of our simple activity challenges.

To encourage the community to get active, some local Eastbourne businesses are offering refreshing incentives for successful completion of the challenge we set each week from mid July until the end of August.

To take part, simply visit the Facebook page, complete the challenge and post a message on the Facebook wall to say you’ve done the activity. Print out your message, and take it to the participating coffee shop where you’ll receive your free hot drink.

NB: Some terms and conditions apply to the offers, full details on our Facebook page.
